It is commonly recognized now that the mechanical behavior of materials constituting battery cells plays an important role in the performance, cycle life, and safety of a battery. In the case of solid-state battery cells with metallic anodes, mechanics becomes even more important. As a part of the Beyond Lithium-ion XIV conference, we are organizing a workshop on mechanics with the goal of exchanging ideas, results, and techniques for understanding mechanical behavior at different length scales. The workshop is designed to promote the flow of ideas to address the following topics from both experimental and computational perspectives:
- Coupling between stress-strain state and charge transport
- Characterization of mechanical behavior at the micro and nanoscale
- Origins of failure in solid-state batteries
- New concepts in battery design guided by mechanics.
